well, its been a little longer since my last blog than i had planned, but here it finally is, woohoo!
as you can see above, i've entitled this blog "nutsness". now, you're probably saying to yourself, "i wonder why steven entitled this blog "nutsness"", so i'll tell you why i entitled this blog nutsness. i entitled this blog "nutsness" because this past couple of weeks have been totally nuts!
the timing of the whole hand injury was interesting! interesting in that it came just before our busiest two weeks so far this year. is interesting the right word? basically, i tried to not let it hinder me or take away from my work in any way, but sleeping with a cast just doesn't go very well, so i'm always a little tired at the mo! and then as i found more and more out about having to get an op and everything, well, my head was just away with it a bit! (fiona just walked in and said she just had a shower but forgot her towels were all in the wash, so she had to dry herself with those little paper towels, lol) as far as the operation goes, i'm having it on thursday, and luckily i only nee the metal screw, not the hipbone, so thats cool! so yeah, please pray the op goes well, and thatzi'll be able to get home on saturday no problem!
as far as work goes, everythings gone pretty good. we had our ridiculously busy saturday, where we had wesley scouts for 5 hours, then immediately after another kids club thing for 4 hours! wesley scouts went really well, it was our christmas party, and everything ran really smoothly, and the kids all had a great time, and the leaders were all very happy. and then there weren't very many kids at the next thing, but it was fun, we just played with them, did a wee craft, baked some ookies, so twas grand! we were knackered by the end of the day, but everything went well, which was good!
then on the tuesday we had our nativity play for the christmas celebration for Bethanien, the Methodist Church owned hospital we live and work at. It was so much bigger than any of us had expected, it was in the Markuskirche, the big church that people go on tours of, and there was circular tables set out, for dinner which came later, and there was 50 tables with at least 10 seats at each, meaning we did the play in front of more than 500 people! I was getting really fed up leading up to it though, cos people just kept on criticizing the way i speak or something, and i was just like "i'm a foreigner, i'm allowed to sound like a foreigner!" so before we did the play, i wasn't in a great mood, but the play itself went really well, people said they understood everything, and a few people said i was a great Joseph, so all good in the end! and then afterwards, we had a huge meal, which we got for free cos we'd done the nativity play, and we chatted with lots of people, and i had a great night in the end! really enjoyed it!
then the rest of that week was spent organising things, when i wasn't doing something to do with my hand. fiona and i organised jungschar, which was on thursday and went very well. then we were all very busy organising "angels in the city", our outreach day in Chemnitz, which was on saturday the 13th. we had put a lot into organising it, we had 4 different projects: a free cafe, a group collecting rubbish, a group handing out stories and sweets to kids, and a string quartet going into two old-folks homes. i was also organising the services we had as send-out and as feedback with another youth-pastor. when it came to the actual day we were beginning to panic, because nobody had showed up by 12:30, when we were meant to start. but luckily they all came at about 13:00, and we had about 30 people, which in hindsight was the right number. it totally shows that we just have to trust God, He knows what He's doing. All the groups went well, the cafe people had some good chats wi people who were very happy to take a load off for a little while during the stressful christmas period, the group collecting rubbish were also spoken to by a few people who were very impressed to hear they were doing it voluntarily, the people the story and sweets group met were all very pleased having something totally random and friendly to brighten their day a little, and the people in the old folks homes were so happy that people came into play them music the sang along, some even cried! then that night we had an international party for the volunteers and also for the foreign people living in Chemnitz! we had people from Iran, Czech Republic and Italy. twas a great laugh, Fiona had organised it very well, and everyone was in good form!
so i wanna thank God for His blessings and what He has done over these past few weeks! He was in control the whole time and we need to remember not to lose sight of that!
this week, for me anyway, is now centred around the op. i was in the hospital yesterday for a grand total of 6 hours, just all preparation for thursday, and was in again for a half hour today. so yeah, i'm a little nervous, but i just need to keep reminding myself that God's in charge! still, your prayers are very much appreciated!
I hope you have a very merry Christmas, whoever you are, wherever you are! :o)

Luck
Life is like a box of chocolates,
You never know what you're gonna get.
Everyone gets something different,
On that you can bet.
Some people are called lucky,
They've wealth and looks and fame.
But if that's what luck is,
Then I'm playing a different game.
For me luck lies somewhere else,
In something which has ne end.
It lies in the people I know,
the people I can call "Friend".
I may be poor, ugly, a no-name,
I may be a thousand miles away,
But with these people in my life,
I can be happy every day.
So I can't buy a Ferrari,
People don't want my photo,
And as far as being pretty,
I may just be so-so.
But I know that life is good,
I know I've found greatness,
For it's in all my friends,
That I find life's true richness!

My Hand!
So, this whole story starts a few months back.
About a week and a half before I came to Germany my football team was having a 1sts vs 2nds match, and I was going away the manager said he was gonna have me on the bench, to try out a new defense without me! So, no problems there. But then our keeper wasn't able to make it, so since I was just gonna be on the bench I said I'll hop in nets, sure!
About 15 or 20 minutes into the second half one of our 2nds hit a shot down to my left, so I dropped down and saved it with my left hand. It hurt immediately, and having fractured my thumb when I was, like, 12, I thought it felt kinda like that again! So after the match I got my brother to strap it up with crepe bandage the way they had back then!
But the next morning it was still killing me, and it wasn't just the thumb, it was the wrist too! So I thought I'd best go and get it checked out! So I went and was seen very quickly, and they told me it was probably my scaphoid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scaphoid), and normal practice for that was a cast! But they needed to take an x-ray to see if it was fractured or broken or anything! Luckily it wasn't, so they put the cast on for 8 days! After which they took it off and checked again for breaks or fractures, of which there was again no sign!
So they sent me on my merry way, and I left for Germany, with the wrist in a normal support bandage! It hurt every now and again, but was getting better! I hadn't had any pain in it for quite a while, and thought it had fully healed! So when I went in nets on Monday night, I had no idea of what would happen!
Basically, one of the opposition hit a high looping shot which was dipping in just under the bar, so I, kinda leaning back, attempted to tip over! I'm pretty sure that if I tried that type of save 100 times, 95 times the ball wouldn't even touch my thumb! But, what happened this time? It landed right directly on the tip of my outstretched thumb, and it hurt immediately!
A minute or two later we had a drink break, and I looked at it and could see how it had swollen up huge very quickly! And I could feel how bad it hurt! So I asked Barry to have a look at it, and we both agreed I should go get it checked out asap!
So at the hospital I told them about what had happened before, and showed them the x-rays I'd brought with me from home, ya know, just in cases! So they had a look at them, twiddled with my thumb a little, then took a couple new x-rays. The Doctor then called me in a wee while later and simply said, "Well, you don't have to have studied medicine to see that there's a very clear fracture there!" In the scaphoid, meaning I went one better than last time! It mustn't have been fully healed at all, and I therefore had a weakness there! So they put it in a cast, and I got to choose the colour, so I went with red, cos it's Man United colour! The Doc then told me that there is a hand-specialist in Chemnitz and that I need to go to him, which I did today and set up an appointment for Thursday!
Why do I need to go to the specialist? Because the normal practice in this case is surgery! The surgery entails putting a metal pin or screw into the hand! But hopefully that won't be necessary and the cast will suffice! I'll write again on Thursday to let y'all know the verdict!
What's the most important thing to take from this though? Thnat I pulled off the save both times and didn't concede a goal! :P That said, I ain't ever doing nets again, it just doesn't seem to agree with me!
God bless you, whoever you are, wherever you are! :o)

Week, um, 10ish?
Well, whatever week it actually was, I mean this past week since I last wrote my blog. The week of Monday 24th to Sunday 30th!
This was a good enough week, in a number of ways.
Things are moving along nicely in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, a village where we want to start offering a kidsclub or afternoon drop-in for the kids. We met with the Headmaster of the grammar school to see what he thought would be best for us to offer, and also to see if we could advertise there! He was very enthusiastic, and thinks the fact we have two native English-speakers is what we should go with. So it's looking like being an English-club! We also met the head of the English department in the school and she's very keen for me to go in for classes to talk good England with the kids. So I might be doing that soon!
I nutmegged Barry at football. I don't think he liked that.
On Tuesday we, the team, had individual meetings with Barry and our coordinator lady Ellen Meier, and they were to give a bit of feedback on how we're feeling personally and how we're getting on workwise, and then also to get their feedback on us. So, I'm happy to say, that they're very happy with me, and gave me a lot of encouragement! So that was great, and I'm encouraged and looking forward to going on with the work!
When we were practising our nativity play on Tuesday night we were in absolute stitches, we did it pretty well, but then started just spoofing all our lines, and mucking about and overacting, twas well funny!
I have a new friend, he's called Pepe, he's a penguin, and he's from Portugal! No, I haven't gone crazy, I created this little character to use for kidsclubs, mainly for the younger kids, and got a wee teddy penguin to go with that! Its fun!
On Saturday night we had an Irish evening, with dancing and stuff, and my friends Bethany and Jenny, who are studying in Leipzig, came up for it, and we had a good ol' laugh!
Thats about it, for this week, twas a good week, twas quite busy, but twas good! It was great, every piece of work we did this week I enjoyed, like, a lot! I didn't find any of it stressful, the kids were all in good form, and weren't at all stressful, everything this week went well! So I thank God for that!
Thanks again for all your prayers, and please keep going with them, I assure you they are very much appreciated and very much needed!
God bless you, whoever you are, wherever you are! :o)

The Story So Far...
Well, the whole thing started on the 12th of September! That was a friday, and that was the day that my parents and my sister drove me down to Dublin, where I met for the first time Fiona Orr, who is also a part of this adventure!
What is that adventure? IMT, International Mission Team! Basically, what that is, is a team of young people from wherever spending a year doing mission work in Europe, our team being in Chemnitz, Germany! The team is me, from Northern Ireland, Fiona Orr from the Republic of Ireland, Steff Gerisch from Germany, and Lukas Fritsch, also from Germany!
Fiona and I left her house in the wee hours of the morning of Saturday 13th September, and flew to Berlin, then trained it from there to Chemnitz, where we were met by Gillian, wife of Pastor Barry Sloan, who's from Northern Ireland but has been a missionary here for 10 years!
We soon went to the building in which we'd be living in for the next year, which, for those of us from outside Germany, is a bit random! It basically is like an apartment block but ya share rooms, and there's one kitchen, and one bathroom, and one living room! Its there for people who are doing voluntary internship year things in the hospital beside us, and one of the people responsible for IMT got us in there! But, luckily, we all have our own individual rooms, and are actually able to have a separate kitchen and big meeting/living room!
It's funny to think back to that time, when I had just met Fiona, considering how well we know each other now! I'm very glad Fiona is here! It can get quite tiring talking German all day, and sometimes ya just need to escape from it, and get some English back into ya! Thats why it's great to have Fi, just simply having a chat in English is nice! Thats not to say that that's all she's good for! She's a great girl, I get on well with her, she's quite ditsy (eg. I asked her, "What's your mums name again?" and she replied, "Mum!") and its amusing! But she also is there as an ear to listen if I need to vent about anything, and, most importantly, we're on the same wavelength as to what we wamt IMT to be doing! But, I think one of the ways God has used me most so far is for her! I think I've been a big support for her, and that she's leaned on me quite a bit! I don't mean that as blowing my own trumpet, but I think it's important to know in what ways God uses you! And people have told me so, as well, so I think I'm doing ok! I can honestly say I'd probably have been driven nuts by now, were she not here, so I'm very thankful of her!
On that day we also met Lukas for the first time! He wasn't what I had expected, think he was closer to Fiona's expectations though! He came out of the door to us, and didn't say anything, just handed us our keys! Twas a funny introduction, but it does fit with the person I now know Lukas to be! I get on well enough with him most of the time, he's a bit quiet, and contemplative, but he has a bit of a similar sense of humour to me! Sometimes!
We later on met Steff as well! And my first impression escapes me, now, but I have, of course, gotten to know her much better now! She's typically german, says exactly what she thinks, can be quite serious, and is a bit controlling!
Which brings me to what the reason we're here is! IMT was designed to come in and to develop our own ideas as to what we can do here in Chemnitz to show Gods love, build His Kingdom, and to basically be a positive, helpful presence and example of faith! We attend a couple of Kidsclubs every week: one, called Kirchenclub, which is every Wednesday, is in an estate in a nearby town which is always interesting, as the kids don't have great home lives, and are a bit rougher! But, they're brilliant, I have a great time playing table-football, board-games, and simply just talking to them! It warms the heart that kids who can be quite aggressive and closed off run to the door to give me a hug when I arrive! We are also in charge of another kidsclub, which takes place in the church and is more church-based, and we take one youth group every week, and take two others once a month respectively! There's also a few other things we help out at, eg. bible study, kids church, Wesley Scouts!
The work itself I've found to be good! I'm really enjoying building up relationships with the kids, the young people, and the church-members! And I think I've already been of blessing to some of them, which is, ya know, the whole reason God has me here, ya know?
The development of our ideas is beginning to really pick up steam too! Thanks to not a small amount of prayer, and input from Barry Sloan, (for whom I'm very thankful, for his wisdom and his friendship) we've come up with ideas for projects which should be really good here, and a real blessing, and what God wants for Chemnitz!
God answers prayer! He was listening when we were crying out to Him in frustration, in need of comfort, in need of His help! And He gave us those things! He was also listening when we prayed for IMT, that we can put a lot in, that we can sacrifice things, that we always put His work first! I don't think He's done there yet, not by a long shot, I mean, I think He's going to keep on affecting us and teaching us, and bringing us closer to who He wants us to be, perhaps for the rest of this year! I think He will use those people around us a lot to do that as well, our leaders, and perhaps people we meet in the work!
What has God been doing in me so far? He has definitely been bringing me closer to Him! My bible reading has gotten to the point where it's not a struggle to do it everyday, and that I don't need to have a specific time where I read it everyday! I simply want to! Can't put it down sometimes! He has been teaching me something everytime I've read it as well! I find I always have one of those moments where it seems like it was written for me and only me! Whether its something I didn't know, or its a reminder of something I'd forgotten, or its a kick up the ass, there's always something that speaks to me! I also am improving in my prayer life, learning just how much God really does listen and does answer prayer! I'm learning as well just how near us God really is! I sometimes get homesick, naturally, but I really think I haven't gotten as homesick as I would have because God is here giving me a hug, being an old friend giving me some company! I really have never relied on Him as much as I have since I came here, and I'm overwhelmed by the fact that He's always there for me!
That's the Story so far, so to speak! I plan now to continue writing once a week! It'll normally be a lot shorter, and hopefully a bit funnier! But I had to squeeze in, like, 9 or 10 weeks there! But I hope you all weren't too bored! And please come back and read every week!
Thank you for your prayers and support already this year! And please continue to pray for me, for the team, for the work, and for the people in Chemnitz! The bible says that when two or more people agree on something, God will do it! So if just two of you, my lovely readers, pray about the things you've read here and will continue to read, I hope, then God will answer that prayer!
My love to you whoever you are, wherever you are! God Bless! :o)

God Bless! :o)
